In my experience Christians tend to be “either/or” instead of “both/and” thinkers. We seem to get wrapped up either in politics & social issues OR we focus exclusively on matters that we think pertain to the advancement of the Kingdom of God, like the saving of souls and discipleship. We forget that Jesus taught us to pray that His Kingdom and will would materialize “on earth” as it does in heaven. God promises to establish justice “on earth” (see Isaiah 42:4). On this basis, I submit that both realms matter to God.
If you could interview a Christ-follower from Iran or China or another nation where human rights are routinely violated because of oppressive governing and you asked her, “If your country finally embraces a democratic system of government and you have the opportunity to vote for your leaders, would you participate in elections?” What do you think she’d say? I anticipate that she'll give a resounding “Yes!”
God calls and equips people to serve in all of the various streams of life, don’t you think? God not only needs people to serve as pastors and missionaries, He wants people to use their gifts, passion and training to serve as scientists, teachers, doctors, in the media, in the entertainment industry and in government.
Have you found this series helpful? Frustrating? Let me know. I’m interested in gaining a better perspective. Thankfully, we have the Holy Spirit. We can count on Him to show us the way forward.
