This particular E-pistle is a bit of a challenge for me to write. I have what I think is a healthy fear of legalism. I don't want those under my care to believe that this Christian life is about trying harder. I want them to know that it is about receiving more.
That said, I also realize that usually, in order to receive more, you have to be in a place to receive it. That's essentially why the spiritual disciplines are so important. That's what they are for- they put us in proximity to God's life. They are like dinnerware, upon which God's meal is served.
It pains me to see so many Christians living so far below the spiritual poverty line, when God's table has been set, His storehouse is full and when He is so generous!
It pains Him to see us settling for so much less than Jesus died to provide for us. We forget that God is "abounding in riches for all who call upon Him" (Romans 10:12 NASB).
We don't seek God to earn His blessings. We seek God, in part, to receive His blessings.
How is God to be sought? In solitude and in community. Consistently. Do not underestimate the effectiveness of seeking. Spend time with God on a daily basis. Read His Word, especially the New Testament. Let it speak to you. Don't be in a hurry when you read it. Take some time to talk about your troubles. Tell Him your wants. Continue doing this. Watch what happens when you seek Him just a wee bit more!
