We know that God is present to us, meaning that He is not only with us at all times, but that He gives us His attention. We can become more aware of His abiding presence and attentiveness to us if we learn to be present to Him.
As you would guess, there are benefits to this. It's been said that you become like what you behold. We experience transformation into greater and greater Christ-likeness when we learn to fix our gaze on Him. We also experience an awareness of Him that makes it virtually impossible for us to become unsettled in the face of adverse circumstances. This steadiness is not manufactured by human willpower. It is the expression of God's life in us. It usually materializes over time as being present to God becomes our pattern for living.
What I am sharing with you is information I have borrowed from those who are farther along this journey. I consider myself a novice, but I am learning.
Some time ago, I asked the Holy Spirit to help me learn to live only one day at a time and not borrow any trouble from the future. In response, I sensed Him saying, "I will teach you to live one day at a time and I will also teach you to live one moment at a time." About this same time, I became introduced to writers like Frank Laubach and Jean-Pierre de
Caussade. I'd already been introduced some years back to Brother Lawrence. Each has mentored me through this process. I haven't arrived, but I am learning. What I am experiencing is an awareness of God's continuing availability to me and I see in myself a desire to be fully available to Him. This is a real adventure in what Jesus described as abundant life.
Does living this way interest you? God invites you also. No special ability is required. Just a desire and if you ask, He'll even supply that.
